Head of Department - Stage Production

The Head of Department will lead and manage the development and delivery of the Stage Production pathways. The stage production pathways include:

  • Level 3 Set, Props & Costume
  • Level 3 Lighting & Sound for Live Productions
  • Level 3 Hair and Make-up for TV, Theatre & Film
  • Level 4 Theatre Making

This includes overall responsibility for curriculum leadership, and quality assurance across the pathways, ensuring all provision is industry-relevant, creatively engaging, and aligned with awarding body requirements.

The role involves overseeing teaching teams, technicians, and industry practitioners; leading academy and BOA Group productions; and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. The post-holder will play a key role in fostering a positive, professional, and supportive departmental culture where both staff and students are empowered to achieve excellence.

Main responsibilities
  • To lead the pathway teams in developing and implementing an exciting, industry-led, destinationdriven, Stage Production curriculum and learning experience.
  • To work collaboratively to develop course materials and resources that reflect the vision, ethos, and expectations of the academy.
  • To maintain the exceptional quality of teaching and learning across the department.
  • To work closely with the Head of Screen Production on the planning and execution of major collaborative projects with other pathways, and with industry partners.
  • To work closely with key staff from BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy on the planning and execution of BOA Group Productions.
  • To plan and execute a variety of projects within the Stage Production pathways. ▪ To deliver lessons within the Stage Production pathways.
  • To ensure the regular assessment and monitoring of learner progress, and lead on responsive intervention action within the pathways.
  • To ensure the frequent setting of independent study and the assessment of this work across the Stage pathways.
  • To manage the deployment of visiting staff and creative industry professionals in the Stage pathways.
  • To be responsible for health, safety and the assessment of risk within Stage Production related activities.
  • To communicate student progress with learners and parents through reports, consultation, and progress evenings.
  • To ensure that the department’s own policies and procedures reflect the Academy’s policies and aspirations.
  • To keep up to date with current curriculum developments in education.
  • To keep up to date with current industry trends within the creative industries and theatre/live events sector.
  • To ensure learner’s needs are being met in the department through use of the SEN register and associated information.
  • To act as lead interval verifier, working with teaching staff, assessors and awarding bodies, to oversee and ensure quality assurance processes are implemented correctly.
  • To manage allocated budgets and resources when required.
  • To promote events, productions and showcases that display, advertise and promote the pathway and the work of whole academy.
  • To liaise and work with other specialist staff to arrange and monitor work-based learning and placements.
  • To advise the Senior Leadership Team of the successes and challenges of the Stage Production pathways.
  • To engage with creative industry partners.
  • To undertake pastoral responsibilities in conjunction with a team of tutors.
  • o support and promote the academy practice regarding discipline and professional conduct and support staff in their duties and professional development.
  • To undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required at your initial place of work or at other locations in the Trust.

 


salary / scale point: l1-5 (£51,773 - £57,137)
